Parent’s Corner
What Parents/Guardians need to purchase for soccer:
SYS will issue to each player a full uniform: a jersey, shorts and a pair of tall athletic socks. These have already been paid for in the players’ registration fees.
ALL players are REQUIRED to wear shin-guards while at practice or during a match; no exceptions. Shin-guards are to be worn covered as completely as possible by the players’ socks. Players without shin-guards are not allowed to participate in soccer activities on the field.
Players age 6 years and older are REQUIRED to wear cleats. Players younger than 6 years may wear sensible athletic shoes of their choice; no sandals, flip-flops or dress shoes/heels.
Shin-guards and cleats are easily available at local stores in Brunswick County. Many consignment or re-sale stores carry used children’s cleats at affordable prices. If you feel that you absolutely cannot afford to purchase new cleats or shin-guards for your child, please contact SYS. We have extra cleats and shin-guards available (for a small donation to the league) that have been donated to us from past players and more than likely we have your child’s size.
Parents may want to have available clothes appropriate for weeknight practices: extra athletic shorts and t-shirts, sweatpants or sweatshirts, clothes that can get dirty with no concerns. Socks for soccer play go up to the child’s knee. Parents may want to have extra pairs of tall athletic socks available for practices. Please send children to practices and matches in clothing appropriate for the weather and season. Extra layers of clothing under your child’s uniform are a good idea during colder weather. Players who are overheated or numb from cold temperatures are endangering their health.
The uniform that SYS issues to each player is intended to be worn during a soccer match. Players may wear it during practice, but it must also be worn during a match. Each player’s jersey must be visible during a match. During cold weather, sweatshirts/jackets must be worn UNDER the jersey so that the jersey color is easily identifiable to other players and/or referees.
SYS recommends that children have sunscreen/sunblock applied to their exposed skin during practices and matches, as there is no shade or shelter on a playing field. Bugspray (insect repellent) may also be a good idea for your child. Water is the best refreshment for your child during sports/exercise activity. SYS strongly recommends that adults bring water with your child to practices/matches. Some teams may decide to assign responsibility to a different family each week to bring refreshments/fruit for the whole team.
